Private Swimming Lessons
We offer private swimming lessons for a 30 minute session with one of our swimming teachers on a 1:1 or a 1:2 basis. These are suitable for anyone new to swimming, wishing to learn for the first time and develop confidence, or for the more experienced swimmer wishing to develop technique.
Our pre-school lessons are designed to develop water confidence in children between the age of 3 and starting primary school. Children will learn basic skills including kicking, arm action and putting their face in the water. Pre-school lessons are an ideal first-step to swimming before moving onto junior lessons.
Junior lessons are ideal for children of primary school age and aim to develop technique and skill across all of the common strokes. Water confidence and awareness of safety is also a primary focus of lessons. Lessons take place in 30 minute slots on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday evenings and Saturday mornings during school-term time.
Adult Swimming Lessons
Adult swimming lessons are ideal for anybody wanting to learn to swim for the first time or anybody who is already comfortable in the water and wishing to develop technique.
How to book lessons
For information about any of our swimming lessons or to enrol onto a scheme please contact our Swimming Lessons Coordinator, at the pool on 317506 or by email on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Pool Based Activities
During public swimming sessions the pool is open for general use, be that swimming lengths, enjoying play time with children or simply having a relaxing float in the water. We avoid the use of lane ropes where possible to allow as much flexibility and manoeuvrability as possible. The pool is 25m long, 7.5m wide and has a sloping gradient of 1m at the shallow end to 2m at the deep end. Kick boards and pull buoys are available for use upon request.
Fun Sessions - Saturdays 2.30pm to 3.30pm
Fun Sessions are a fantastic weekend activity to enjoy with the whole family. The play mats and toys are in the water, the music is on and for a full hour it's all about having FUN!
Places are limited to 40 people in the pool so be sure to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
Rookies - Tuesdays 4.00pm to 4.45pm
Our Rookie Lifeguard programme, in addition to having fun, aims to teach children aged 8-12 about the dangers associated with water and how to stay safe. In addition children are taught how to help other people who may be in distress and basic lifesaving skills such as CPR and the Recovery Position. As children progress through the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards they will receive a certificate and a badge.
During school holidays our timetable changes to include a range of different activities including swimming crash courses, snorkelling and fun sessions. Be sure to check back here or on our Facebook page for details of what’s coming up.
Rehab Swimming - Tuesdays 2.45pm to 3.45pm
As part of an initiative run by Manx Sport and Recreation we now offer weekly rehabilitation swimming sessions for individuals with disabilities, health-related needs or recovering from injury. Those recovering from ill health and surgery, in addition to those with poor health or a disability, are a key target group to support and help increase levels of physical activity to aid recovery.
An instructor is on hand to assist and support throughout the session.
At Southern Swimming Pool we have lifeguards on duty at all times, a hoist for people requiring help entering/exiting the water and stair access from the side of the pool (as opposed to recessed ladders).
